A comparison between Maxim and Cosmo.

Maxim is a magazine for men. It is Guys' ultimate Guide to women, sports, TV, music and stuff. Cosmo. is a womens' magazine that talks about beauty, love, sex, advice, style etc. Both of these magazines right off the bat are very different. Lets start by the cover of the magazine. Maxim will always have a sexy, half naked dress women on front of the cover - simply dripping with sex appeal, whereas cosmo. will also have a photo of a woman only this time she 'IS' dressed, and more often than not, in something very stylish - (or so they say). So when you first open the magazine, just like many others you will find a heap of advertising before you even get to the contents of the magazine. Most of the ads that go into cosmo. are beauty ads - marketing cream products, fashion ads, perfume ads, birth-control ads, shape-up - dangerous looking pill ads, whereas in the Maxim magazine, you will have car ads, sports advertising, alcohol ad (as seen in this months issue of maxim "Fat Ass Tequila". Who doesn't want a shot of Fat Ass Tequila?

One thing I have noticed that was a great different in both magazine was the way things were written. In the gentlemens' magazine it was very factual. Articles weren't as long, and things were very organized in terms of the editorial layout. With cosmo, there were several long articles, usually to do with 'sex scandals', or how in '10 steps you could make a guy like you'. that had to extend to the spare pages in the back. The layout design was a little more playful and there was definitely a lot more colour in the pages.

Women are obsessed with how they look, or how to turn on a guy in bed - which is why week after week it is the same thing. 'Confessions', 'life advice', 'the next best anti-wrinkle cream for under $100'. Its the same as the fact that there is always some girl in lingerie or a swimsuit on the cover of Maxim - because this is what (for the men that buy this magazine) want to see. Ew to both of these magazines, I am surprised that in this economy they are both still sitting on the stands.

Okay this is about the coolest music video

FYI

PS. I wish people would stop dissing advertising. Yes. There is a lot of advertising out there there sucks, but that's because there is no one there (like there is on TV) that filters this advertising. SO! to entertain your short-attention-span minds here are a few great commercials:

Continuation

Television is such a huge part of our lives. The time spent in front of Tv is a huge percentage of time taken out of our everyday. Tv has such a huge amount of information on it that could be very educational, and important but the sad truth about it all, is that people resort to things like for instance 'reality Tv' - which is insane. MTV is no longer a music channel and more often than not bombarded with shows, like 'The Hills'. Television does have a way of reaching out to people, tricking them into thinking that this is "really what happens when ones' boyfriend dumps a girl" - which, in most cases isn't entirely true. Life experiences are there to be experienced not watched on Tv. News nowadays is almost always biased. There is so much pain and suffering going on in the world that only really a small percentage of that is getting to Tv. So much of it is being filtered to the point that it is hard to trust what is said on the news.

Cable. I don't know much about this, apart from the fact that the book talks about HBO, the history channel and MTV. I don't have cable, and I hate all of you that do.

The movies. I am a big fan of watching movies - though I am picky. The movie industry in the states has such a huge amount of money that goes towards it. Hollywood is sometimes what's seen as what drives America. People thrive on the next best movie, the obbssession with Holly wood stars - this 'perfect' look that every girl/man wants. The following link below shows how a little girl's thoughts are altered by the media (its a brilliant commercial from dove) :

Chapters 3 - 7 // Media and Culture

When you really stop to think about it, music really does play a huge role in our lives. Think how life would really be if there just wasn't any music. Think about movies with no sounds to create the atmosphere - music is a part of everyone, even if they choose not to believe it. We hear it everywhere we go. It is connected to all sorts of technology to move us in one way or another. Music comforts us when we are sad, makes us smile, makes us upset - it has a million ways to affect us in many different levels, whether we recognize it or not. Most of the time we are oblivious to music being around us, if we do not distinctively play a track on the computer or on our ipod - but it is, everywhere. It has always played a huge role in our lives, tracing back to the times when jazz, gospel and the blue were considered, 'trendy' and 'popular' music. Musicians were able to voice their opinion, talk about serious matters through their music. Music started to grow rapidly, introducing different genres of music, appealing to different groups of people. With this increase of music different cultures started integrating with one another and became exposed to different lifestyles and voices. Music has the ability to break this barrier between groups of music and is able to unite people though sound and taste. It has blurred the distinction between, white and black, male and female, north and south. During the expansion of music in variety and style musicians were able to respond to the public, expressing their emotions in music, singing about events, politics etc.

This generation that we live in today is allowing us to easily assess what ever kind of music we want through to means of sharing, downloading and purchasing from the click of a button. We have access to an endless amount of music that is usually taken for granted. The iphone has an application whereby the user is able to hold up his phone to a song playing out in the open, and is able to register the name and type of the song. Thanks to the efforts of modern technology.

The radio was one of the first means of technology that allowed people to know what was going on around the country, as well as listen to music. People were able to judge on their own whether they liked the music or not, without being prejudice. Radio was another form of what we know Television to be today, without having the visual aspects. There were stories, comedies, music, news. The radio was the main focus of the house, whereas the TV has now replaced that spot. The radio is no longer something that family's hold in their house as a center point but it is still used in cars. It is said that radios are more commonly used in sub-urban places because people are more likely to drive cars to get from one place to another, in comparison to those in an urban environments where public transportation is how people travel around the city. People are then. more likely to resort to listening the music on their ipod.

// a response to 1,8,9 & 10 // Media and Culture

"high and low culture" - where do I begin? do I believe it in? I do think that to some extent certain groups of people are more educated in culture and different forms of art and media. It doesn't take much time or much intelligence to watch an episode of 'The Hero's', as appose to watching and enjoying the performance of a ballet or an opera. The reason why there are only groups of people that appreciate ballet is because of the understanding of the art. Poetry is also a very complicated, and intelligent form of literature, but you cannot stop to appreciate it if you do not understand it. And to understand it comes a great deal of time spent learn about it - so one is able to react to it open-heatedly without being educated and having a background to what it is all about. It doesn't mean to say that those to like opera and ballet cannot enjoy an episode of 'Greys Anatomy' or 'Dancing with the stars' - but I do feel that there is a level or culture. This doesn't however mean that these certain groups of people have an upper-hand, or in other words feel that they are intellectually and culturally superior, it just shows that some people have given more time and effort to learn about great forms of art, that have been around centuries. Another fact is that others may not choose to engulf their time into arts such as these, in which case they just have not allowed themselves to experience different forms of media for themselves to truly judge.

The fact that there is so much media out there it is scary to know that a lot of it funnels from one place. Much of the media is owned by so few companies, one person for instance that owns a vast amount of it is Rupert Merdock. Every single person has a mind of their own. Every single person is entitled to their own opinion, judgment, views. So with that in mind, the fact that single person is in charge or so much media that spreads out across the country is a little worrying because I feel that you will not get many side of views. You may perhaps get biased opinion, a narrowed-minded opinion - it's a controversy!

Chapter eight and newspapers. Newspapers go all the way back to the letter-press, when everything was manually done. In the late 18th century newspapers were made on hand produced expensive paper with newly made mechanical machines to produce the paper. This led to the fact that only the upper-class men were able to afford it due to the increase of price in the paper. The industrial revolution kicked in, creating many many jobs for the middle class people that took over much of this news-printing production. That being said, there was cheaper paper with larger quantities which meant that the 'newspaper' was now much more affordable and much larger group of people were reading. This also meant that it wasn't only a certain, 'selected' group of people reading the news anymore - it was all sorts. Upper-class, middle class, some lower-class - the next percentage of readers naturally became the women. Women started to becomes more educated that this meant that they were able to take part in conversation and could judge and have opinions about what was going on. More advertisements started coming in - which was quite often marketed towards women. Due to the evolution of printing the speed of the transfer of info has increased dramatically throughout the decades.

How has this affected our ability to process information? Well for one, we don't read as much. We watch far too much TV, and we are drawn to the Internet which may not always be for educational purposes and more commonly for entertainment. Newspapers and advertising in particular has changed because of that. Stories are shorter, headlines are bigger, pictures are huge - all in hand - because we have such short attention spans. We are very easily distracted by things like 'facebook', 'Twitter', 'e-mail' that there isn't much time to read a full body copy on an advertisement - like they some of the great 60s ads back in the day. An Ad now, has to catch your attention within 3 seconds of looking about it. If not. You just turn the page. Media, such as Newspapers, Magazines, and Books all have changed according to the most important Media - "The Television".

Elizabeth Gilbert talks about creativity for the starving artist.

This is such an amazing speech by the author that wrote the book, 'Eat, Pray and love.' I know many people have very short attention spans and after clicking onto the youtube link, you are going to realize that it lasts for 19.29 minutes, you may be turned off and not feel the want to watch it anymore - BUT! force yourselves to sit through this 'only 20 minutes of your day' speech, because she says some beautiful words about the artist within.

enjoy:
